About the Course

Photoshop scripting automation and tools.

Greg covers the basics as he's building helpful tools. We think you'll find this a good mix of theory and practical application.

In this course,  you get an introduction to Photoshop Scripting. Some knowledge of basic programming is required. The course will be delivered to you week-by-week. This allows you to watch each video and have time to practice and ask Greg questions here in the comments, before the next lesson arrives.

Underlying the instruction is Greg's focus on teaching you how to help yourself. Learning how to learn by referencing the help docs, and other ways to self-serve, you'll be able to quickly build on this introductory course.

Syllabus

Week by week look at the training

Week 1

Introduction & ExtendScript Toolkit

We kick off the course and go over the scripting choices in Photoshop, actions vs scripts, and the difference between the .js and .jsx file extensions.

ExtendScript Toolkit

The ExtendScript Toolkit is an application that comes with Photoshop that we'll be using to create our scripts. Learn how to install it and get familiar with its features.

Lesson 02 - Finding Help

We go over where to find the documentation for Photoshop scripting and how to use it.

Lesson 03 - Running Scripts

Once you finish a script you'll learn where to install it in the Photoshop directory to be able to run it from within Photoshop and how to assign it to a shortcut.

Lesson 04 - Documents

Week 2

We go over various things you can do with a document, such as creating them, selecting specific documents, and running commands on them.

Lesson 5 - Layers Part 1

Similar to the documents lesson, we go over various things you can do with layers. Learn the difference between an ArtLayer and Layerset and how to work with text layers.

Lesson 6 - Layers Part 2

Find out if a layer is an ArtLayer or Layerset and learn how to loop through various types of layers. We also create scripts to find/replace and add a prefix/postfix to layer names.

Lesson 7 - Organize Code and Cycle through Layers

We go over how to re-use useful code by using #include. We also create a script to cycle through layers with a hotkey.

Lesson 8 - Files, Folders, and SaveOptions

In this lesson we talk about how to create files and folders, read in data from text files, the various save options, and the open/save dialog.

Lesson 9 - Export Layers to PNG

We develop a script to save all the layers within a group as PNG files.

Week 3

Lesson 10 - Combine Images

We create a script that looks through a folder and finds images with a specific suffix and then combines them all into one document.

Lesson 11 - Script Listener

The Script Listener allows us to record Photoshop commands as we use Photoshop. Learn how to install and use it in this lesson.

Lesson 12 - Channels

We go over various things you can do with channels. Learn how to create them, select specific channels, and copy channels from layers or other documents.

Week 4

Lesson 13 - ColorSampler, and Name and Website watermark

We create a script that adds artist information to the image. It allows us to place a name in the bottom left corner, website in the bottom right, and fill out the Document Info. We also learn how to use the ColorSampler to get information about specific pixels.

Lesson 14 - Watermark Grid

We develop a script that adds a faint watermark grid of text over an image.

Lesson 15 - ScriptUI

ScriptUI

ScriptUI comes with Photoshop and allows us to create UI's for our scripts. We go over how to find the documentation on how to use it and we create an example script showing how to use it.
